Tattoo? What tattoo?
Gone are the days when a tattoo was forever and “permanent”. The technology available in the world of medical grade lasers allows us to safely and effectively remove our unwanted ink. The topic of today’s blog is what to expect when undergoing your laser tattoo removal experience with us and how the healing process works.
Let’s begin with how it works In a nutshell! At VC Dermal we use a medical grade Q-switched laser, which sends rapid speeds of high intensity light into the skin where it attracts to and shatters your tattoo ink into teeny weeny particles. These are then eventually absorbed by your lymphatic system and removed by the body. If you would like a more detailed explanation, please click on the link below – you can even see some incredible before and after images and a video demonstration.
Firstly a common misconception is that the laser works by “burning the ink out of the skin”. Luckily for our skin’s sake this is not the case as too much heat onto the skin would leave you with unsightly scars and potential for burns. The process of tattoo removal relies on your own lymphatic system, which is responsible for carrying away the fragmented ink, in addition to patrolling the body for other toxins which don’t belong…Yes! That’s why we need to know if you’re a smoker, as having a compromised immune system may alter results or prolong the recovery and healing process.
The 2nd common misconception is that you will only require 1 session and taddah! All gone! Your skin colour, location of the tattoo on your body, age of the tattoo, ink colours and general health and lifestyle factors, means we estimate that most clients require between 8-15 sessions to achieve the results they desire! Yes, we have had some fantastic results with just 5 or 6 treatments and in some cases we have had clients who have had over 15 sessions. I’m not here to sugar coat it, just provide you with the straight forward truth.
What to expect straight after the treatment…
One thing that is commonly asked about laser tattoo removal is: What to expect after a treatment is performed. Physically you may experience some mild discomfort in the area, and/or the sensation of a sunburn like feeling. Visually you will notice the tattoo turns a “frosted” white/grey colour, which is the ideal response and generally disappears within a few minutes. There may also be some redness, swelling or bruising to the treated area, which usually disappears after a few days from your body’s natural healing processes.
Although it may not occur with every client, blisters and pigment changes are a potential side effect. To ensure your treatments run smoothly we suggest applying an ice pack to the area when you get home. Apply Bepanthen when required and ensure you avoid any activities, including the gym or hot showers that may cause more heat or friction to the area in the first 48hrs post treatment. Stay out of the sun and of course avoid touching or scratching. In darker skin types we recommend the use of a pigment serum such a Lira’s Pro Lite to maintain regular skin tone and help with any potential pigment changes.
If you happen to get a blister or two, don’t panic! Call our clinic to let us know as we are armed with the know-how and healing devices to ensure everything returns to normal.
Lastly, the tattoo itself will most likely look exactly the same as before your procedure. In the time between your next appointment, you may start to notice gradual changes and fading start to occur as your lymphatic system begins the process of eliminating the shattered ink. We then repeat it all over again in 8-10 weeks time at your next session!
