What Is Microdermabrasion?
Restore confidence in your skin with a rejuvenating treatment that gently removes the thick outer layer of skin.
Microdermabrasion is a fast, non-invasive skin treatment that gently and painlessly removes the outer most layer of the skin which is home to dead skin cells, blemishes, wrinkles and fine lines. Removing this layer gives you smoother and younger looking skin while minimising the signs of blemishes and aging. It also breaks down the barrier that stops many skincare products from absorbing into the skin. The treatment is safe and effective for a wide range of common skin conditions and the best part is results can be seen immediately and last for around one month. The thick outer layer of skin is targeted by spraying tiny crystals that remove the damaged skin to reveal the undamaged skin underneath.
Microdermabrasion is a quick process with most appointments lasting one hour or less depending on the size of the targeted area. Once your appointment is complete you can get right back to doing the things you love with no time out for recovery.Book Your Appointment
Does Microdermabrasion Work?
Microdermabrasion is a safe and effective solution for a range of skin concerns.
Does microdermabrasion work? Yes, it does! There are a range of skin conditions that can strip you of your confidence and far too often the easiest solutions such as make-up will only make the underlying problem worse by causing further irritation to your skin. Thankfully microdermabrasion is a fast and incredibly effective remedy for many common skin conditions. Skin conditions microdermabrasion can help with are:
- Acne scars
- Age spots
- Dull-looking complexion
- Enlarged pores
- Fine lines
- Sun damage
- Uneven skin tone
A few sessions may be required to achieve the best results, but you will notice results right from the very first treatment. If you want to know if microdermabrasion is right for you, speak to one of our highly trained staff members.
How to Prepare for Microdermabrasion
A fast treatment that requires very little preparation.
Good news! There is very little in the way of preparation for your microdermabrasion appointment, but there are a few small things you will need to be mindful of in the weeks before your appointment. Two weeks before your appointment you should avoid direct sun exposure, not receive cosmetic injectable treatments, stop using tanning creams, depilatory creams, waxing and laser hair removal on the treatment area. Three days before your treatment you should stop using exfoliating creams and masks and stop using products with active ingredients. Finally, immediately before your treatment you should remove your makeup and cleanse your face, but that’s it!
Aside from those small things you may go about your day-to-day life as normal!
How to care for skin after Microdermabrasion
A fast recovery so you can get back to the things you love
One of the biggest benefits to microdermabrasion is the lack of downtime. Once your appointment is complete you can get back to doing the things you love, but there are a few things to be mindful of to make sure you get the best results and so your skin can recover. Avoid using make-up for the rest of the day. You should also avoid direct sun exposure under normal circumstances, but it is particularly important for at least seven days after your microdermabrasion appointment as new skin has been exposed and is at an increased risk of damage from the sun; the same goes for scratching and picking at your skin. For 48 hours after the appointment, avoid exfoliating and using products with active ingredients. You should also avoid excessive exercise that will result in sweating as it can cause irritation to the skin.Book Your Appointment

Frequently asked questions
Microdermabrasion is a superficial treatment that uses 3 methods simultaneously to help reduce the appearance of unsightly skin conditions such as:
- Acne scarring
- Blocked or congested pores
- Blackheads and white heads
- Enlarged pores
- Superficial pigmentation
- Fine lines
- Uneven texture and skin tone
The 3 methods include:
1. Exfoliation Mechanism (using a diamond tip). The diamond encrusted tip strategically glides over the treatment area providing exfoliation even in sensitive and smaller areas such as the face, as well as large areas such as the back and shoulders.
2. Vacuum Mechanism: The multi-control vacuum provides versatile suction to:
- Remove dulling dead skin cells
- Unblock pores
- Relieve clogging and congestion
- Increase circulation supporting oxygenation, nutrient delivery and accelerated repair.
3. Lymphatic Drainage: Specific gliding techniques combined with vacuum suction increase the flow and natural detoxification of the lymphatic system, aiding systemic toxin and pathogen removal.
Depending on your skin concerns and severity of your condition, the number of treatments required will vary. A starter course of between 5-8 treatments followed by refresher courses every few months may be required. We recommend that you come in for a complimentary paramedical skin consultation where one of our dermal therapists can determine the best ‘in clinic’ and home care regime for pre and post treatment and ongoing skin maintenance. For more dramatic results, a customised chemical peel may be combined with a microdermabrasion treatment to accelerate and prolong results.
The lack of side effects and potentially low risk of microdermabrasion treatment is one of the reasons it is one of the most popular, non-invasive skin treatments performed in the world. Compared to other skin and cosmetic treatments, microdermabrasion has the least amount of side effects versus results and you can usually return to normal activity right away meaning little to no downtime. The most common side effects are mild to moderate redness, minor skin flaking and in some cases a mild breakout.
After a microdermabrasion treatment, you must ensure that you stay out of the sun and avoid heat, excessive sweating and the use of active cosmeceutical skin care for up 48 hours and use an SPF 30+ or greater every day. As part of your microdermabrasion treatment, you must also ensure that you follow the post treatment prescription prescribed by your paramedical therapist to ensure maximum results.
Microdermabrasion is suitable for most skin types with both men and women. In some rare cases a microdermabrasion may not be suitable if the skin is inflamed, sensitive or presents itself with rosacea. Microdermabrasion may exacerbate the condition which is why it is important to have a paramedical skin consultation prior to your treatment to determine your suitability.
Microdermabrasion is a very comfortable, non invasive skin treatment. Most clients feel very little to no pain during their treatment. The sensation when having a microdermabrasion treatment can be compared to that of an exfoliating scrub combined with a light facial massage.
Most assume that you can only have a microdermabrasion treatment on the face, however it is not uncommon to treat areas such as the back, shoulders, chest, upper arms and buttocks. In fact, we can develop acne on any part of the body (excluding the palms of our hands and the soles of our feet). For this reason we can treat almost any part of your body with microdermabrasion, and we have different sized tips to accommodate for small to even large areas.
At Victorian Cosmetic Dermal Clinics we use only the finest medical grade diamond tips which provide far greater results than standard ‘beauty grade’ crystal tips. Our medical microdermabrasion results in more dramatic, lasting improvement for skin conditions such as:
