While we agree that generally you get what you pay for, it doesn’t mean you can’t find affordable skin care that is effective; you definitely can! What we recommend are products that we all have tried, tested and seen results with.
If you’re short on time or cash you can still look after your skin by using these 3 simple products for maximum results.
Cleanser (not soap)
- Use a cleanser morning and night to remove surface impurities and makeup.
If you are just using water to wash your face you are not really cleansing your skin thoroughly; You are simply using water to remove perspiration from the skin but not the excess oil and dirt. There are some of us who are fortunate enough that can say that this is all they have ever had to do and their skin looks good, which is great and they probably have great genes to thank for that! By using these few basic products however, you can just maintain your great skin and prevent premature aging/dehydration/loss of firmness and discolouration.
Our picks
Skinstitut Gentle Cleanser – For all skin types, especially delicate and sensitive skin types. Gentle enough to use around the eyes, removes makeup, purifies, soothes and hydrates dry, hyper sensitive skin.
Skinstitut Glycolic Cleanser 12% – Suitable for most skin types for intense and deep cleaning (except red, irritated or sensitised). Exfoliates, removes dead skin and decongests. Great for oily, acne-prone skin.
Skinstitut L-Lactic Cleanser – For all skin types, even dry and irritated skins. Reduces irritation and sensitivity. Exfoliates and decongests. Great for mature, dehydrated skins.
Moisturiser
Use a moisturiser morning and night after cleansing to soften and smooth the skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Make sure your day cream has an SPF to protect your skin from the sun, if it doesn’t you need to apply sunscreen over the top of your mosituriser.
Do you not moisturise? Or do you feel you’re applying a moisturiser all day and still feeling dry? Either way, something’s not right…
We usually find that oily, acne-prone skin types are cleansing but not moisturising because they’re concerned they will break out or look shiny, and yes this can happen but only if you’re using products that are not suited to your skin. By not using a moisturiser at all what you’re actually doing is causing your skin to over compensate for the oils you’re removing from your skin when cleansing, this in turn can actually make your skin oilier and prone to breaking out more then it would, had you been using a moisturiser. Always seek advice from a professional and start using a moisturiser day and night.
If you are using a moisturiser but finding it’s just not enough and feel you need to reapply 3 – 4 times a day to stop your skin feeling tight and uncomfortable, then you are most likely using a cream not suited to your skin. It’s important to find out if your skin is dry or dehydrated or both (you can have normal or oily skin and still be dehydrated as well).
A richer texture cream or one that is more hydrating may be the change you need, if you don’t know what skin type you are, have a skin analysis from one of our experts to find out. You also need to make sure you are exfoliating 2-3 times a week as this will allow your moisturiser to absorb as it should & remove the build up of dead skin cells.
Our picks
ASAP moisturising daily defence SPF30 – replenishes essential moisture, leaving the skin feeling smooth, soft and supple. Great day moisturiser for all skin types & contains an spf to protect against UVA & UVB rays.
Skinstitut Moisture Defence – Available in 3 different formulas for Normal Skin (intense hydration with antioxidants), Dry Skin ( increased moisture without clogging) and Oily Skin (clarifying moisturiser, decongests and reduces excess oil. Does not clog skin).
Scrub
Use a scrub/exfoliator (same thing) 2 – 3 times a week (this is usually more then enough for most skin types). This removes the build up of dead skin cells, allows for better product absorption & helps decongest & keep your skin clear.
Our picks
Skinstitut Glycolic Scrub 14% – Suits most skin types, except red, irritated or sensitised skins. Repairs and strengthens without dehydrating.
Skinstitut Enzymatic Micro Peel – For all skin types, especially dry, dehydrated and sensitive skin. This amazing product leaves the skin feeling smoother and looking brighter. Unlike a manual scrub you apply this onto clean skin, leave 5 – 15 minutes and simply rinse off. The active ingredients act like Pac men and eat up all the dead skin cells and you simply rinse it off.
