Anti-wrinkle injectables contain botulinum. Not only does this reduce wrinkles in the short term, but it also decreases the movement of muscles that cause wrinkles in the long term. Hence doing an anti-wrinkle treatment every third or fourth month prevents your wrinkles from deepening. A common approach is to combine this anti-ageing treatment with dermal fillers, skin needling and other treatments, since their combined effects make for the best outcome. In the long term they stimulate collagen production, while straightening and plumping your face in the short term, ultimately restoring your youthful skin. At our facial rejuvenation clinic the nurse who will perform your cosmetic injections will be happy to consult with you in order to find the best possible facial treatment for your condition and goals.
Uses for anti-wrinkle injections
As noted, anti-wrinkle injections reduce movement in muscles that cause dynamic lines. Hence they not only reduce lines, but also stop them from deepening.
Anti-wrinkle injections with botulinum are therefore typically used to eliminate lines and wrinkles, and lift the face. They can also be used to treat chronic migraines or excessive sweating.
Makes wrinkles and lines fade or disappear
Due to the injected muscle’s reduced movement, wrinkles caused by it are smoothed out and lines no longer form. Commonly used in the facial and neck area, the treatment works as a wrinkle stopper. It rapidly fades or even eliminates lines and wrinkles in the injected area.
Facelifts do not need to involve any plastic surgery. With injections containing botulinum you can tighten your face and neck, and achieve a far more defined jaw line without going under the knife. Injections around the outside of the face will stretch the skin and straighten your facial features. Eyebrows and eyelids can also be lifted and other facial lines smoothed away. This is sometimes described as a non-surgical facelift due to its non-invasive nature.
Chronic migraine treatment
Botulinum can also be employed to reduce or eliminate pain caused by migraines. The mode of action is not completely understood, although it is hypothesised that tense facial muscles can cause migraines. Thus, the botulinum relaxes the muscles that are causing the migraine. Unfortunately botulinum injections have not been proven to be effective in treating more common headaches – only migraines.
Treatment for hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating )
People who suffer from hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) can also be treated with botulinum injectables. Excessive sweating is a serious condition for the sufferer, who often finds it not only uncomfortable, but embarrassing in the workplace and social situations. In some cases, heavy application of deodorant is not enough.
Sweating is caused when nerves send out chemical signals to stimulate the sweat glands. By blocking these chemical signals, the injected botulinum drastically reduces sweating. This blockage to prevent sweating is temporary and lasts for approximately five to six months.
No lip fillers
Since it does not result in a plumping effect, botulinum is not used as a lip filler. For plumping of the lips, a dermal filler is recommended.
As with all cosmetic injections, it is a temporary treatment. The anti-wrinkle injections we use here at Victorian Cosmetic Dermal Clinics last for about three to four months.
Conditions treated by injections with botulinum
Injections with botulinum are commonly used for the following conditions:
- forehead lines,
- crows feet (wrinkles around the eyes),
- frown lines,
- lip lines,
- bunny lines (wrinkles at the top of the nose),
- neck lines,
- undefined jawline,
- excessive sweating, and
- chronic migraines.
Facial and neck areas
Anti-wrinkle injections can be applied to your neck, jawline, and underneath wrinkles all over the face. As the injectable relaxes the underlying muscles, they no longer cause wrinkling, and its skin tightening effect further fades lines around the area.
Excessive sweating can affect various areas of the body. Commonly people suffering from hyperhidrosis are affected on the palms of the hands or feet, the scalp, and the armpits. This sweating can be blocked by injectables containing botulinum for about five to six months.
Chronic migraines and muscular pain
It is not clear exactly how botulinum works as a pain reliever, yet it has been proven to reduce pain for many forms of muscular pain including lower back pain, neuropathic pain, cervical dystonia, and bladder pain. It is likely to have a similar blocking character in the nervous system as outlined earlier. The expressed pain pathways are blocked, muscles are relaxed, and the cycle of pain followed by further muscle tensing is thereby broken.
How long do anti-wrinkle injections last?
As a skin treatment, such as fading of forehead wrinkles, wrinkles under the eyes, and marionette lines, anti-wrinkle injectables with botulinum last for approximately three to four months. Working as an excessive sweat blocker the injectable lasts for about five to six months. As a chronic migraine treatment it tends to last for approximately three to four months.
When to use anti-wrinkle injections
By far the most common use for botulinum injectables is to achieve an anti-ageing effect and regain a youthful appearance.
