How to Manage Dry Flaky Skin this Winter

Winter can dramatically change the way your skin looks and feels- and has only been emphasised with lockdown! With cold temperatures and low humidity levels can pull moisture from the skin. On the surface, skin can look dull and feel tight, dry and itchy. At a microscopic level, a lack of moisture and oil weakens your skin’s natural protective barrier,  leaving moisture to vaporise from the skin and leaving it more susceptible to invading chemicals causing redness, irritation and sensitivity.

To start with, it is important for you to know- dry skin is not genetic. It is caused by seasonal changes, incorrect product use and environmental factors.

The cooler, dryer months make a significant difference to how the skin looks and feels. We recommend a few changes to keep it in tip-top condition.

1. Winterize your Skincare Regime.

Yes, winterizing is a thing(according to us anyway)! Like you change your wardrobe for winter, your skincare regime needs to change to protect you from the cold. Change over to thickier textures and nourishing sealers. If you usually use a gel based cleanser, adapt to a cream based cleanser. If you usually wear and oil free moisturiser, change over to a medium weight moisturiser. Changing to more nourishing rich formulas encourage hydration within the product, therefore increasing the moisture content back into the skin. There are certain ingredients for moisture retention and epidermal conditioning to help change the appearance of dry, tight and itchy skin into smooth, supple and silky-feeling skin. A favourite of our clients and staff alike is the LIRA BIO Caviar Creme.

Like you would  layers your wardrobe,  the same goes for your skincare regime. Layering on extra hydration during colder seasons will restore lost moisture and relieve dry, thirsty skin.

2. Buff away the winter: weekly exfoliation is key here! We don’t want to over exfoliate and strip away too much from the skin. But ensuring that we are buffing away the dry skin and isn’t sitting on the surface is super important. We love using Lira PRO Pads once a week, followed by the Lira BIO Hydrating Mineral Masque.

3. EFA’s- hydrate for your health as well as your skin: taking an EFA (aka- Essential Fatty Acid) supplement means that we are looking after your skin from the inside. EFA’s ensure that we are producing a good quality sebum, keeping our skin hydrated. We recommend JS Health EFA’s which you can purchase at VC Dermal.

  1. Hook Up the Humidifier. …

The use of an air conditioner/heater at your home and office can dehydrate your skin making it dry and flaky. changes in temperature exacerbate dryness
