What Are Anti-Wrinkle Injections & How Do They Work?

None of us are able to stop the clock on ageing, but the good news is that we have the power to slow it down. In recent years, anti wrinkle injections have become an increasingly popular treatment to enhance your appearance without turning to surgical procedures. This procedure is a simple, safe and effective way to improve fine lines and deep wrinkles of the face, for a more youthful and radiant complexion regardless of age.

Are you considering anti-wrinkle injections for the first time but have a couple of questions about what to expect? As a leading provider of nonsurgical treatments in Melbourne, Dr Rakib Uddin’s goal is to offer minimally invasive treatments aiming to build confidence and self-esteem, by providing subtle natural enhancements to one’s own beauty.

To help you decide if this procedure is right for you, today, we share one of the most common questions we get about anti-wrinkle injections at VC Dermal Clinics. Read on to find out more!

What Are Anti-Wrinkle Injections?

Anti-wrinkle injections are a cosmetic treatment aimed to reduce the appearance of the fine lines and wrinkles that appear on the face due to the natural process of ageing. Made from a commercially prepared form of botulinum toxin, these injections target and aim to reduce the appearance of frown lines, smile lines and facial wrinkles. Aside from treating wrinkles, cosmetic injectables can also reduce the appearance of globular frown lines (expression lines) and upper lip wrinkles which tend to develop by the age of 40.

How Do Anti-Wrinkle Injections Work?

Anti-wrinkle injections are a commercially prepared form of Clostridium botulinum toxin. When injected, it is possible to target and relax specific facial muscles and reduce facial wrinkling. Simply put, anti-wrinkle injections work by blocking the chemical signals the brain sends from the nerves to the muscles telling them to contract. Once you have been injected with anti-wrinkle treatment, the afflicted muscle is no longer able to contract, thus softening the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The purpose of anti-wrinkle injections is to offer patients a minimally invasive solution to help you improve and maintain the appearance of your skin.

What Is The Best Age To Start Anti-Wrinkle Injections?

Contrary to popular belief, you do not need to be past a certain age to start considering anti-wrinkle injections. Most patients wanting to have anti wrinkle injections generally start around the age of 30. While research has not proven this, it is thought that having anti wrinkle injections from your mid-twenties can actually help to prevent wrinkles. However, with that said, there is no single age that applies to all patients, and the best time to consider this treatment option will depend on your specific goals and circumstances.

What Are The Benefits Of Anti Wrinkle Injections?

The benefits of anti-wrinkle injection treatment are numerous, with the most common advantages including:

  • Anti-wrinkle injections help to soften the appearance of fine lines on the face for a tighter, fresher and more youthful appearance.
  • Injectables can be used to treat a variety of non-surgical procedures, including teeth grinding and excessive sweating.
  • Anti-wrinkle treatment has a proven safety record for over 25 years.
  • Anti-wrinkle injections are a non-invasive procedure with little to no downtime, making it the perfect ‘lunchtime procedure’.
  • Administered quickly and precisely by a licensed professional at VC Dermal Clinics, anti wrinkle injections are relatively pain and discomfort free. Upon request, a topical anaesthetic can also be applied before treatment to further reduce discomfort.

How Long Do Anti-Wrinkle Injections Last?

Generally, anti-wrinkle injections will typically last 3 to 4 months. However, factors such as which area is being treated, how your skin reacts to treatment and amount of time you spend in the sun. The expected duration of results is dependent on a number of factors including the dosage administered, your individual skin condition and the degree of muscular use in the treated area.

When the treatment wears off, the muscle simply regains its prior strength and normal movement. The lines and wrinkles also gradually return.

However, after repeated treatments, many patients notice that the muscle’s strength naturally diminishes from being kept in a state of relaxation. This is a desirable effect that can lead to longer breaks between treatment sessions and reduced costs. To ensure that you are getting long lasting results, Dr Uddin will work with you to come up with a treatment plan that is tailored to your individual needs and skin goals.

What Are The Most Common Facial Areas Treated?

Anti-wrinkle injections are most commonly used for the treatment of bruxism, frown lines, forehead lines, and crows feet or smile lines.

However, they can also be used to reduce:

  • Frown lines between the eyebrows;
  • Lines around the nose (bunny lines);
  • Upper lip lines (smoker’s lines);
  • Downturned mouth;
  • Dimpled chin;
  • Neck lines (platysmal bands); and
  • A “gummy” smile (excessive show of gum above teeth while smiling).

In addition to this, anti-wrinkle injections can also be used to improve facial shape, help reduce teeth grinding (Bruxism), treat migraines, and reduce excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) of the face, armpits, palms, and soles.

Are Anti-Wrinkle Injections Painful?

Many patients describe anti-wrinkle injections to feel like a slight pinch or sting. At VC Dermal Clinics, our team of licensed aestheticians aim to make your experience as comfortable as possible. Ice and vibration are used to effectively minimise discomfort and topical anaesthetic can be applied upon request to further reduce discomfort.

Are There Any Side Effects?

After anti-wrinkle injection treatment, side effects are uncommon however some minor adverse events are possible. Immediately after treatment, you may experience redness, tenderness or swelling in the treated area. This is perfectly normal and side effects will disappear within a few days. You may also notice slight bruising at the injection points and there is no need to worry as bruising will also subside within a matter of days.

To minimise potential side effects or discomfort after treatment, we recommend the following guidelines:

  • Avoid lying down for a few hours after your treatment as this will allow the proteins to settle into place.
  • Avoid facial treatments such as microdermabrasion, chemical peels or dermal rolling for a minimum of 2 weeks post treatment.
  • Do not exercise for a minimum of 12 hours after treatment.
  • Avoid exposing your skin to excessively hot or cold environments (saunas, hot tubs, ice baths or snow).
  • Avoid massaging or applying pressure to your face.
