Microdermabrasion – What’s Involved and What are the Benefits?…
The quest for smoother, softer, brighter, younger-looking skin is something many women and men can relate to…. The promise of a minimally invasive, pain-free, skin procedure which can overhaul your skins radiance, texture and tone (in your lunchbreak) is perhaps one of the many reasons why Microdermabrasion has become such a popular skin treatment, let us explain why…
So what exactly is Microdermabrasion?
The procedure is a deep cleansing, surface exfoliation treatment that removes dead skin cells sitting on the upper layer of the skin, which can improve the appearance of sun damage, wrinkles, fine lines and wrinkles, age spot, acne scarring, melasma and other skin-related concerns.
At Skin by VC Dermal, we offer microdermabrasion as a standalone treatment or can incorporate it with one of our other in-clinic treatments to maximise our overall skin results.
How does Microdermabrasion work?
Microdermabrasion uses three methods of exfoliation simultaneously.
- A diamond-encrusted, tip-head is selected depending on your skin type and condition and is strategically glided over the skin, loosening the dry, dead skin-cells and provides a precision exfoliation – even in the hard to reach places.
- A vacuum mechanism, the diamond tip head is attached to a suction-wand which encourages suction of dead skin and debris out of the pores. This, in turn, reduces congestion and increases circulation supporting oxygenation, nutrient delivery and acceleration.
- Lymphatic Drainage. Specific gliding techniques combined with vacuum pressure increases blood flow and natural detoxification of the lymphatic system aiding systemic toxin and pathogen removal.
However, it is important to note that not all microdermabrasion treatments are the same and there are many different types of machines…
So, let’s start with the “At-Home” devices…. OK, so we appreciate the concept does sound tempting… You can perform the treatment in the comfort of your own home, in your own time, it is a once-off payment and it takes less than 10mins… Sounds pretty good so far?… Wrong! The reality is, the results you can expect by using an “At-Home” device are similar to using an at-home, face-scrub, at best.
Home devices are very limited with what they can legitimately sell to a consumer. As the phrase goes, “you get what you pay for”. Many of these home devices are marketed and compared to in-clinic treatments from a price and results perspective and that is very, very far from the truth… (Trust us – we see disgruntled, “home-device” customers frequently – and they soon become happy, Skin by VC Dermal clients – with significant, glowing results!).
Benefits of a microdermabrasion
So, let’s talk about the benefits of microdermabrasion and why do we even need a deep surface exfoliation?
Did you know we have five layers of skin in the epidermis?… Epidermis = upper layers of the skin only. A skin cell is born on the first layer, and then moves up through the layers of skin to the surface performing a specific function on each layer (we will go into that another day.)
This process usually takes 30-40 days for someone who is 20 years old. But, as we age this process starts to take longer. Once the cell reaches the top layer of the skin we don’t need it anymore and it is just a dead skin-cell that will naturally flake off, however 70% of the time this process actually takes a lot longer than it should and we end up with a backlog of dead skin-cells sitting on the surface of the skin. As soon as this happens the fifth layer says to the first layer, “Hey I have a backlog up here – can you please stop producing new skin cells?…” NOOOOOOOO! We do not want this to happen, EVER!
New, healthy skin cells are what keeps our skin looking youthful, healthy, plump and bright. With a dead skin build-up sitting on the surface of our skin, it will become more prone to breakouts, enlarged pores, dullness, dehydrated, uneven, aged and pigmented… Yep, sounds grim doesn’t it?…
This is where our “superstar” microdermabrasion treatment comes in to “save the day” as it buffs all those dead skin cells away! Hurrah!!
It is quite common for a microdermabrasion treatment to be used in conjunction with other in-clinic treatments, eg. a chemical peel, for it helps clears the path for products and peeling agents to penetrate the skin and get down to where they need get to for best results.
Microdermabrasion treatments are usually performed once every 2 weeks. After just one treatment you will notice a more radiant, brighter impact on your skin, however we do recommend a course of treatments to gain the longer-lasting benefits to reduce and improve the appearance of uneven skin tone, superficial pigmentation, uneven texture, congestion and milia, enlarged pores, blackheads, scarring and dryness.
It should be highlighted that not all skin types are the same and some skin types will not benefit from a microdermabrasion treatment as it can actually impair the skin further. That is why the team at Skin by VC Dermal always recommend a thorough skin consultation with one of our professional skin therapists, who will recommend the most suitable treatment for you, based on your skin type and results you are wanting to achieve.
