Why Timing Matters in Laser Hair Removal — and Why We Do It Differently at VC Dermal Clinics

Introduction

If you’ve ever had laser hair removal somewhere else and thought, “Why am I still getting hair growth?” — this one’s for you.

At VC Dermal Clinics, we see so many clients who’ve spent thousands at shopping-centre laser chains, had ten or more treatments, and still aren’t satisfied with their results. Nine times out of ten, the problem isn’t the laser — it’s the timingand the technique.

In this blog, we’ll break down exactly why performing your laser treatments every 8–10 weeks on the body and 4–6 weeks on the face is essential, how the hair growth cycle affects results, and why treating too often (or with weak settings) can actually make things worse.

The Hair Growth Cycle — and Why It Changes Everything

Here’s the part most people don’t know: your hair doesn’t all grow at once. Every single hair follicle is in a different stage of its cycle, and laser only works when the hair is in the active growth phase (called the anagen phase).

Let’s break it down:

  • Anagen (growth phase): The hair is actively growing, attached to the blood supply, and rich in pigment. This is when the laser can destroy the follicle.

  • Catagen (transition phase): The follicle starts shrinking and detaches from the blood supply — not ideal for laser.

  • Telogen (resting/shedding phase): The hair sheds, and the follicle rests before starting again.

Only about 10–20% of your hairs are in anagen at any given time, which means each treatment only targets that portion. That’s why spacing your treatments correctly is key to catching more hairs in their active phase.

8–10 Weeks for the Body, 4–6 Weeks for the Face — Here’s Why

You might have been told elsewhere to come in every 2 or 4 weeks. The truth is, if your treatment is done correctly, you shouldn’t have new hair at that point — because those hairs are still shedding.

For the body:

Body hair grows slower, and it takes roughly 8–10 weeks for enough new hairs to enter the growth phase again. Treating sooner than that means you’re zapping hairs that aren’t ready — and wasting your money.

For the face:

Facial hair grows faster, so we treat every 4–6 weeks. This allows us to catch the right number of follicles at the right time for long-term reduction.

When you follow these intervals, you get maximum efficiency and far fewer sessions overall.

Why Too-Frequent Treatments Can Backfire

Getting laser too often doesn’t just fail to help — it can actually make things worse. Here’s why:

  1. Under-treating the follicle
If the laser doesn’t reach the optimal temperature (around 70 °C), it doesn’t destroy the follicle — it only heats it. That sub-lethal heat can stimulate new growth, especially in hormonal areas like:

    • Face, neck, upper arms, and chest (women)

    • Back, shoulders, and neck (men)

  2. Over-treating too soon
Treating every 2–4 weeks doesn’t allow new hairs to reach the growth phase. You’ll end up targeting empty follicles and seeing no progress.

  3. Under-powered settings
Many clinics “play it safe” by keeping the energy levels too low, especially for clients with darker skin. That might feel comfortable, but it won’t give long-term results.

  4. Paradoxical hair growth
Repeated low-energy treatments on hormonal or dense areas can cause more hair to grow — the opposite of what you want!

Skin Type Matters — Especially for Skin Type III and Above

For clients with skin type III and above (meaning more natural pigment in the skin), the treatment must be performed carefully. We need to heat the follicle without overheating the skin, which requires experience and precision.

If the settings are too conservative, the follicle won’t be destroyed. If they’re too aggressive, the skin can react or pigment. That’s why at VC Dermal, we customise each treatment — wavelength, pulse duration, cooling, and energy — to suit your unique skin type safely.

How VC Dermal Clinics Does It Differently

We don’t do “one-size-fits-all” laser. Our focus is results with integrity.

Here’s how we approach it:

Science-based timing — 8–10 weeks for the body, 4–6 for the face.
Correct energy delivery — We ensure the follicle reaches the right temperature for true destruction.
Tailored treatment plans — Adjusted for your skin type, hair density, and hormonal areas.
Honest education — We’ll always explain what’s happening and why.
No unnecessary sessions — We’ll never tell you to come in every 2 weeks just to fill a calendar.

When laser is performed correctly, you shouldn’t be seeing new hair just two weeks later — that’s your sign it’s finally working.

If You’ve Had Laser Elsewhere and Haven’t Seen Results…

You’re not alone — and it’s not your fault. Most of the time, clients who come to us after failed courses have simply been treated too frequently or with too little energy.

Once we re-map your hair cycle and use the correct technique, we start seeing visible results — fast.

Laser hair removal is an investment in your skin and your confidence. Done right, it gives you smooth, lasting results. Done wrong, it’s an expensive cycle of disappointment.
